The renovation of the 7,835 square feet 5-East Mental Health Department at the Richard L. Roudebush V.A. Medical Center included the installation of door sensor systems, which have been installed along the entire portion of each patient bedroom door. The sensor will alert nursing staff in the event that a patient attempts to hang or drape something across the top of a patient bedroom door. In the event that a patient drapes something over the door, the sensor will report back to a main alarm panel located within the nurses’ station. The A/E has ensured that the door sensor and all associated components are installed to be concealed and as tamper proof as possible. All hardware in the wing has been replaced to match existing anti-ligature hardware on patient rooms to prevent possible anchor points. This design seeks to minimize possible anchor points or other objects a patient could potentially use to harm himself / herself.
